“big” is a new event series that will showcase some of the most exciting and cutting edge acts in dance music for Calgary audiences. Smalltown DJs, The Union and Red Bull have partnered up to bring you this modern collision of music, art and visuals, as the worlds of pop, indie, dance and rap music collide like never before in history. The concept will bring together the worlds best talent in electronic music for a party that Calgary will soon call the biggest and best of its kind. Look for new shows every couple months, and be prepared its going to be “big”.

The first big event will feature the incredible talent of Diplo and Mat the Alien. Diplos sound has been influenced by the geographic areas he spent the most time in Miami, Brazil and the dirty south. He collaborated with DJ Switch to form Major Lazer, and they released their latest project, Guns Dont Kill People, Lazers Do, under his own record label, Mad Decent Records. The album introduces some reggae flavor into Diplos mixes. In 2008, Diplo was recognized for his producing efforts, when he was nominated for a Grammy for producing MIAs smash hit Paper Planes.

Mat the Alien grew up in the UK, but perfected his DJ skills in Whistler BC. His music selection appeals to a wide variety of crowds, spanning many genres from hip hop, funk, dance-hall, break-beats, drum & bass, rock, and more. He learned this from spinning in Whistler to varied crowds of people visiting from all over the world. Hes held weekly residencies at clubs in Whistler, Vancouver and a bi-weekly night in Las Vegas at Eye Candy in the Mandalay Bay. Those attending big are in for a special treat, as Mat the Alien will be debuting his video DJ set.
