Over five full lengths, an EP, and five different live bands in four years, David Longstreth has created in Dirty Projectors a body of music of original and variegated beauty. The breadth of his talents as a song-writer, arranger, bandleader and singer call to mind Prince, Joni Mitchell, and Bjork. His constantly evolving sound—both live and on record, the sheer intensity of the music, and the originality of his voice set him apart. Among modern music makers, he is a maverick; a loner and a rebel.

For their first few records, Dirty Projectors revolved entirely around Longstreth, who wrote and
meticulously constructed their albums with a rotating cast of associates. Starting with Rise Above and the subsequent tour, the Dirty Projectors have turned into a regular working unit, now grown to a sextet with Nat Baldwin on bass, Brian McComber on drums, and harmony vocals by Amber Coffman (also on guitar), Angel Deradoorian (also on keys), and Haley Dekle.

June 2009 saw the release of the highly anticipated fifth album under the Dirty Projectors name, Bitte Orca. The album, written with the whole band in mind—and also, as a response to the dark mood of their 2007 breakthrough Rise Above, was recorded in Portland and Brooklyn in 2008.

Arguably their best, and certainly their most likeable and accessible record, Bitte Orca has received
critical acclaim worldwide, notably scoring a 9.2 on Internet music site Pitchfork. Pitchfork eventually ranked Bitte Orca at number 2 on its 2009 “Best Of” list, and 56 on its list of the Top 200 Albums of the 2000s. Unanimously adored by critics, the record even made it into the pages of TIME Magazine who listed the album as the “Number 2 Album of 2009”
